Empowering youth aged 9–19 from rural and township communities in Southern KwaZulu-Natal — through sport, mentorship, and the belief that talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not.
QHAKAZA – meaning "to shine" in Zulu – works toward empowering youth and emerging communities through sport-based development within Southern KwaZulu-Natal, with ambitions to expand nationally.
We target primary schools, establish league systems, and identify talent — creating structured pathways for young athletes to grow and compete.
QHAKAZA provides a structured alternative to poverty, drugs, teenage pregnancy and peer pressure — giving children a positive environment where they belong.
Beyond the field, we run workshops focused on health, wellness, teamwork and life skills — equipping young people for everything life brings.
Gromingo Mzunga is the Founder and CEO of Qhakaza Sports Foundation, a registered non-profit organisation based in Southern KwaZulu-Natal under the UGU District Municipality. A former professional rugby player for the Lions and Free State Cheetahs, he brings first-hand experience of what elite sport can unlock.
Under his leadership, QHAKAZA works to ensure that sport is accessible to all young people in rural and township communities — identifying talent, developing coaches, and creating league systems among local schools, entirely free of charge to the families it serves.
From dusty fields to game day — our athletes train with grit, joy and the belief that opportunity changes everything.
